ABOUT EKTA NIKETAN

Welcome to Ekta Niketan, a ‘Centre for Unity’; a unique model to address tuberculosis in remote communities without depending on city-based medical doctors.

Ekta Niketan is a community-led tuberculosis (TB) project in a remote tribal village in India. A team of village health workers having minimal formal education are trained to diagnose TB clinically, conduct microscopy, dispense anti-TB drugs, and to keep comprehensive records just as in an institution in a city. More importantly they follow each TB patient's progress during the course of treatment; they visit seriously ill patients in their homes. A volunteer medical doctor with hands-on experience in TB care provides diagnostic support, and uses telemedicine when not present at the centre.

A team of villagers run the TB centre. Having years of trainings and practice, the team is able to provide quality care to TB patients; a medical doctor helps the team in diagnosis and improve their skills, either at the centre or through telemedicine. EKTA NIKETAN covers an area of 70-100 km radius.

EKTA NIKETAN is in a village called Fatepur in the district of Deoghar; the nearest town Madhupur is about 22 km away. TB patients, mostly poor, are from surrounding villages; most patients often try private clinics in nearby towns before coming to Ekta Niketan. Occasionally town-dwellers too come for treatment by-passing govt health centres; healthcare in the area in a sorry state.
