JAN EKTA DAY 10 min

In 1980, Janet Ganguli, a British nurse, founded Ekta Niketan in a remote tribal village in India. Ekta Niketan is now a popular TB centre in the area and is run by a team of trained villagers.

Each year, on 7 May villagers gather at Ekta Niketan in memory of the founder of the TB centre, their beloved Janet. For the last three years the memorial starts with a march through villages asking villagers to unite to stop the spread of TB. This video clip of from 7 May 2026.

BALDEV DAS OF HOWRAH 8 min

Baldev is a migrant labourer, working in an industrial hub near the city of Kolkata. He had been exposed to dusts, also TB from others in the shanty town where he lived for years.

Baldev coughed up blood, and therefore went to a private doctor.. The doctor advised him to return home and to go to a government TB centre. He finally came to Ekta Niketan after trying the government TB centre, also the All India Institute of Medical Science (or AIIMS), the branch of a prestigious hospital in India. .

Baldev had two Xrays, ECG, blood tests, sputum microscopy, CT Scan and a bronchoscopy at AIIMS.

In two parts, Chandoni tells her story.

In August last year (2025) Chandoni’s brother brought her to Ekta Niketan when various treatments at private clinics in the town failed. Very weak Chandoni, a young woman, weighed 25 kg at that time. She could not walk without someone's support.

Chandoni contracted a nasty form of skin TB, Lupus Vulgaris. In April 2026, she has now completed her anti-TB treatment. During the time Chandoni brother came to collect medicines regularly; health workers at Ekta Niketan made several trips to monitor her progress.
